The scholarships listed below will be awarded to students who enroll as a new freshman or transfer for the stated semester. Scholarship values and minimum criteria for subsequent years may be revised upon the discretion of the University.

New Freshmen

Spring 2023 Entering Classes

Entering first-time freshmen who are accepted to Winthrop University will be considered for a merit scholarship. Scholarships are awarded by the Office of Admissions. No separate scholarship application is required. Contact the Office of Admissions with questions regarding scholarship eligibility.

Eligibility for scholarships:

  • A completed admission application must be received by the Office of Admissions by December 1, 2022 for scholarship consideration. A completed application includes: application form, application fee, and official high school transcript. Students submitting applications and scores after December 1st will be considered for scholarships if funds are available.
  • Students will be awarded a scholarship based upon the credentials received by the Office of Admissions as of December 1, 2022. Scholarship upgrades will not be awarded to students if new test scores are received after December 1, 2022.
  • Be admitted by Winthrop University and be classified as an entering first-time freshman.
  • Be enrolled at Winthrop University full-time (12 or more credit hours) each semester.
  • Winthrop reserves the right to cancel Winthrop awards if tuition is covered by another source.
  • Scholarships are renewable for up to three (3) additional years of undergraduate study as long as student maintains financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and has not earned his/her undergraduate degree.
  • Financial aid received from all sources cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance at Winthrop University.  The Office of Financial Aid reserves the right to adjust the value of scholarships as deemed necessary to comply with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

Scholarship Notification

Students who submit their completed admission application by late November 2022 and are admitted to Winthrop University, will be notified about their scholarship eligibility on an ongoing basis.

Students selected for a scholarship will be awarded ONE of the scholarships listed below. Students will be evaluated on high school GPA or high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores for scholarship eligibility (whichever is more advantageous for student).

Winthrop Premier Scholarship

Annual Value:       $  3,500
Four-year Value:  $28,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 5.18 OR average SC GPA1 of 5.08 AND SAT score2 of 1320 or ACT score of 29.

Winthrop Gold Scholarship

Annual Value:       $  3,000
Four-year Value:  $24,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.99 OR average SC GPA1 of 4.80 AND SAT score2 of 1220 or ACT score of 25.

Winthrop Garnet Scholarship

Annual Value:       $  2,250
Four-year Value:  $18,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.74 OR average SC GPA1 of 4.51 AND SAT score2 of 1120 or ACT score of 23.

Winthrop Blue Line Scholarship

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.51 OR average SC GPA1 of 4.20 AND SAT score2 of 1060 or ACT score of 21.

Winthrop Eagle Promise Scholarship

Annual Value:        $ 750
Four-year Value:  $ 6,000

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average SC GPA1 of 4.19 OR average SC GPA1 of 3.86 AND SAT score2 of 1010 or ACT score of 19.

Additional Award

Palmetto Boys and Girls State Scholarship

Annual Value:        $ 500
Four-year Value:  $ 4,000

This scholarship is awarded in addition to one of the Winthrop scholarships listed above. Awarded to students who completed the Palmetto Boys State or Palmetto Girls State program as a rising high school senior and who are listed as a participant by the program.

Scholarships for Out-of-State Freshmen

Students selected for a scholarship will be awarded ONE of the scholarships listed below. Students will be evaluated on high school GPA or high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores for scholarship eligibility (whichever is more advantageous for student).

Winthrop Gold Scholarship

Annual Value:       $10,165 ($3,000 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $81,320

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 4.0 OR average GPA2 of 3.85 AND SAT score3 of 1320 or ACT score of 28.

Winthrop Garnet Scholarship

Annual Value:       $9,165 ($2,000 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $73,320

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.92 OR average GPA2 of 3.83 AND SAT score3 of 1200 or ACT score of 25.

Winthrop Blue Line Scholarship

Annual Value:       $8,165 ($1,000 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $65,320

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.80 OR average GPA2 of 3.62 AND SAT score3 of 1090 or ACT score of 22.

Winthrop Eagle Promise Scholarship

Annual Value:       $7,415 ($250 scholarship + Out-of-State Tuition Waiver1)
Four-year Value:  $59,320

Students who are awarded this scholarship typically have an average GPA2 of 3.54 OR average GPA2 of 3.35 AND SAT score3 of 1020 or ACT score of 19.

 

1 Out-of-State grant/waiver from all Winthrop sources cannot exceed the out-of-state portion of tuition ($7,165 per term in 2021-2022).

Transfer Students

Spring 2023 Entering Classes

Transfer students who are accepted to Winthrop University will be considered for a merit scholarship. No separate scholarship application is required.

Eligibility for scholarships:

  • A completed admission application must be received by the Office of Admissions by December 1, 2022 for priority scholarship consideration. Students who submit an admission application after December 1st will be considered for scholarships if funds are available. A completed application includes: application form, application fee, and official college transcripts mailed from all colleges/universities attended, even if credit was not earned or if credit is not desired. Additionally, an official high school transcript is required for transfer applicants who have not completed 30 semester or 45 quarter hours and before transfer students can be considered for the South Carolina LIFE Scholarship.
  • Be admitted to Winthrop University and classified as a new entering transfer student.
  • Complete at least 12 or more semester hours or 18 quarter hours (excluding remedial, developmental, and vocational courses) at prior institution(s) before beginning classes at Winthrop.
  • Have not previously-earned a bachelor's degree.
  • Is not classified as a readmitted student.
  • Meet the minimum criteria for the scholarship.
  • Final college transcripts must be received no later than two weeks after the first day of Winthrop fall classes for students who wish to qualify for a scholarship based on a final college transcript GPA.
  • Upon receipt of the final college transcript, the Office of Admissions reserves the right to reduce and/or remove a scholarship if the student no longer qualifies due to GPA or credit hours.
  • Be enrolled at Winthrop University full-time (12 or more credit hours) each semester.
  • Transfer students enrolled in the Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS) will not be eligible for Transfer Scholarships.
  • Winthrop reserves the right to cancel Winthrop awards if tuition is covered by another source.
