The South Carolina Need-Based Grant is awarded to the neediest students who submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with priority given to those who file by Winthrop's priority deadline (January 15, 2026 for 2026-27).
As a public institution, Winthrop University receives limited funding from the State of South Carolina for this program so it is unable to provide funding to all students who potentially qualify. Recipients must be SC residents who also meet certain eligibility and renewal requirements. Students must be attending at least half-time.
Due to limited funding, the SC Grant cannot be automatically renewed each year. Students
cannot receive more than $14,000 of SC Grant funding during college enrollment. Returning
students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and meet the SC Grant
awarding requirements each academic year to be considered for funding. In most cases,
state regulations require students to earn at least 24 credit hours in the prior academic
year and have at least a 2.000 cumulative GPA to be considered for funding (some exceptions
for those who attended less than full-time). Returning students who have earned 24
credit hours in prior fall/spring will receive priority for funding.
SC Grant funding is typically $3200 per student per year. Student's attending less
than full-time will receive pro-rated amounts. SC Grant may be less depending on a
student's Cost of Attendance and other aid and determined financial need as defined
by the FAFSA.
