Winthrop University: Office of President - Dr. Edward A. Serna

Dr. Edward A. Serna

Office of the President

A Message from Edward A. Serna

Twenty years ago, I sought a higher education institution where I could thrive as a non-traditional-age undergraduate student. I wanted a sense of belonging in a place where folks worked hard to ensure my success. I desired challenging coursework and close interaction with my professors. I valued opportunities to think differently, collaborate broadly and push myself beyond my ‘normal.’

I discovered all of this and more at Winthrop. My undergraduate experience here transformed my life and set my career on a trajectory that I could not have imagined at the time. The same happens today for our bright, hard-working students.

As you consider attending Winthrop, I invite you to discover.

Discover the breadth, depth and value of the Winthrop experience. Discover national-caliber academics, civic engagement, undergraduate- and graduate-level research, campus involvement and leadership opportunities -- all in a beautiful campus setting full of folks who treat you like family.

Discover our vibrant local community called a “Boom Town” by the New York Times. Discover the cityscapes of nearby Charlotte and outdoor adventures close to campus along trail systems, Lake Wylie and the Catawba River. Discover a downtown arts and cultural scene second to none and enhanced by the talents of Winthrop students and faculty.

There’s so much here to explore you won’t have an idle moment unless you choose to. Attend concerts and shows. Catch a Division I athletic contest (Go Eagles!), a club sport game or an esports battle. Better yet, participate in those activities yourself. Immerse yourself. Grow. Belong.

Thank you for your interest.

Check out our About Winthrop page, read our pride points, and scan recent headlines. I invite you to come visit campus and discover all Winthrop has to offer you. I have a feeling you’ll quickly love it here as much as I did all those years ago.

Always an Eagle,

Edward A. Serna
President
