Types of Students

Competency Based Education (CBE) Students

Effective summer 2026: CBE students are now eligible for federal financial aid.

If you wish to apply for federal student aid, but have not already completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the academic year in which you plan to enroll at Winthrop University, you should review the Winthrop University Financial Aid Application Process and complete the FAFSA online. Make sure to list Winthrop University as a college to receive your FAFSA.

Types of Potential Financial Assistance

  • Private Loans - Student will need a credit worthy co-borrower. Student will need to use a lender that provides private loans to non-degree seeking students.

Financial Aid Disbursement

Unlike traditional programs, CBE programs disburse aid based on a student's progression. For example, if a student is attending part-time, they must complete 12 credit hours before a second year of financial aid can be disbursed. Each student may have a different disbursement schedule depending on when they complete their credit hours.
