Academic Scholarships

The scholarships listed below will be awarded to students who enroll as a new freshman or transfer for the stated semester. Scholarship values and minimum criteria for subsequent years may be revised upon the discretion of the University.

New Freshmen

Spring 2019 Entering Classes

Entering first-time freshmen who are accepted to Winthrop University will be considered for a merit scholarship. Scholarships are awarded by the Office of Admissions. No separate scholarship application is required. Contact the Office of Admissions with questions regarding scholarship eligibility.

Eligibility for scholarships:

  • A completed admission application must be received by the Office of Admissions by December 1, 2018 for scholarship consideration. A completed application includes: application form, application fee, official high school transcript, and SAT or ACT scores. Students submitting applications and scores after December 1st will be considered for scholarships if funds are available.
  • Students will be awarded a scholarship based upon the credentials received by the Office of Admissions as of December 1, 2018. Scholarship upgrades will not be awarded to students if new test scores are received after December 1, 2018.
  • Be admitted by Winthrop University and be classified as an entering first-time freshman.
  • Meet the minimum criteria for the scholarship.
  • Be enrolled at Winthrop University full-time (12 or more credit hours) each semester.

Scholarships are renewable for up to three (3) additional years of undergraduate study as long as student maintains financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and has not earned his/her undergraduate degree.  The Winthrop Fellows and National Achievement/National Hispanic/National Merit scholarships have additional renewal criteria.

Financial aid received from all sources cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance at Winthrop University.  The Office of Financial Aid reserves the right to adjust the value of scholarships as deemed necessary to comply with federal, state, and institutional guidelines.

Scholarship Notification

Students who submit their completed admission application by December 1, 2018 and are admitted to Winthrop University, will be notified about their scholarship eligibility on an ongoing basis.

3 When combined with the National Achievement/National Merit Scholarship and other scholarships, this scholarship will cover the cost of tuition, a double-occupancy residence hall room, and the standard meal plan each year, or your actual charges, whichever is less.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Scholarship

Awarded to students who have a class rank of 1 or 2 on the final high school transcript or who are designated as a valedictorian or salutatorian of their high school class.
Governor's School for Science and Mathematics

Awarded to students who graduate from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.
Governor's School for Arts and Humanities

Awarded to students who graduate from the South Carolina Governor's School for Arts and Humanities.
Palmetto Boys and Girls State Scholarship

$1,000

Awarded to students who completed the Palmetto Boys State or Palmetto Girls State program as a rising high school senior and who are listed as a participant by the program.

1 Recipients of the National Achievement/National Merit Scholarship are not eligible for the Additional Awards.
2 Recipients must remain eligible for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship in order to renew the Winthrop Fellows Scholarship each year.

Transfer Students

Spring 2019 Entering Classes

Transfer students who are accepted to Winthrop University will be considered for a merit scholarship. No separate scholarship application is required.

Eligibility for scholarships:

  • A completed admission application must be received by the Office of Admissions by December 1, 2018 for priority scholarship consideration. Students who submit an admission application after December 1st will be considered for scholarships if funds are available. A completed application includes: application form, application fee, and official college transcripts mailed from all colleges/universities attended, even if credit was not earned or if credit is not desired. Additionally, an official high school transcript is required for transfer applicants who have not completed 30 semester or 45 quarter hours and before transfer students can be considered for the South Carolina LIFE Scholarship.
  • Be admitted to Winthrop University and classified as a new entering transfer student.
  • Complete at least 12 or more semester hours or 18 quarter hours (excluding remedial, developmental, and vocational courses) at prior institution(s) before beginning classes at Winthrop.
  • Have not previously-earned a bachelor's degree.
  • Is not classified as a readmitted student.
  • Meet the minimum criteria for the scholarship.
  • Final college transcripts must be received no later than two weeks after the first day of Winthrop fall classes for students who wish to qualify for a scholarship based on a final college transcript GPA.
  • Upon receipt of the final college transcript, the Office of Admissions reserves the right to reduce and/or remove a scholarship if the student no longer qualifies due to GPA or credit hours.
  • Be enrolled at Winthrop University full-time (12 or more credit hours) each semester.

Scholarships are renewable for up to two (2) additional years of undergraduate study as long as student maintains financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress and has not earned his/her undergraduate degree.
