The Winthrop Alumni Association established the Student Alumni Council (SAC) in 1984 to stimulate the interest and participation of students in the progress of the university and to preserve and further the feeling of loyalty and fellowship between the university, students, community and alumni.
SAC members, often referred to as “tradition keepers,” foster a desire among students to support the university and concern for its well-being; educates students on the purposes, benefits and activities of the Alumni Association; shows students ways in which they can support the University following graduation; identifies specific needs of students as they prepare for graduation to assist them in making the transition from students to alumni; and engages and educates students and the campus community in the history and traditions of the University.

We look for excited, passionate Winthrop students who want to share their love of Winthrop and its traditions with students. Students interested in joining SAC will complete an application and an interview with the executive committee and Alumni Association staff.
We have completed fall 2024 recruitment. Keep an eye out for applications to re-open in August 2025!
From freshmen move-in day through graduation, SAC members serve as the resident "tradition keepers" who promote the spirit, history and tradition of Winthrop and provide opportunities for students to develop into active, engaged citizens and future alumni. Events that SAC hosts include:

One of Winthrop's best known traditions, Convocation began with founding president, David Bancroft Johnson, gathering the student body together to makr the beginning of the school year. Today, President Serna '02 convenes all members of the entering class for an official welcome. The Student Alumni Council will welcome students to the event and distribute the Garnet and Gold Book which serves as a guide to all of Winthrop's history and traditions!
At the close of Convocation, participate in another of Winthrop's treasured traditions, the Blue Line, as the newest class of Eagles processes to front campus for a community picnic!

Stop by our table in the DiGiorgio Campus Center to speak with Jostens representatives about your options, get sized, and purchase your Official Winthrop Ring. You can get up to $150 off your ring when you order at the table!

Grad Finale is your one stop shop for all things Commencement! The Student Alumni Council and the Alumni Association invite December graduates to the Winthrop Bookstore where they receive information on graduation status, alumni benefits, and purchase class rings, graduation announcements and regalia. Campus departments at the event include Annual Giving, Career Development & Internships, Dacus Library, Graduate Studies, Jostens, Oak Hall, Records and Registration, Student Financial Services, Technology Services, West Center and the Winthrop Alumni Association.
