Biography

Dr. Edward A. Serna

Edward A. Serna, Winthrop Class of 2002, became the 12th president of the university on July 1, 2022. He is the first alumnus in the university’s nearly 140-year history to serve as president.

Under his leadership, Winthrop has secured its highest U.S. News “Best College’s” ranking; earned a new classification as a research institution by the American Council on Education; embarked upon its strategic plan, Winthrop: United in Excellence; secured millions in external research and programmatic grants; launched an Honors College and multiple new degree offerings; invested more than $35 million into campus facilities; enhanced the university’s culture of philanthropy; and much more.

Prior to his Winthrop appointment, Serna had most recently served as president of the University of Maine at Farmington and as interim chancellor at the University of Arkansas–Fort Smith. 

Serna is a board member of the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Rock Hill Economic Development Corporation, the Arts Center at Fountain Park, Westminster Towers, and the Foundation of the Carolinas.

He received a doctorate of education in higher education from the University of Alabama, a Master of Science in management information systems from Auburn University, a Master of Science in industrial management from Clemson University, and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Winthrop.

Serna and his family, wife Lauren and daughters Anna Kate and Caroline, reside in the President’s House on campus.
