New Student and Family Programs

New Student Checklist

This checklist was created to help identify tasks that should be completed prior to your enrollment at Winthrop.

Before Orientation

  • Review your Admissions Portal to ensure that you have completed all of the listed requirements..
  • Register for Orientation and explore the information on our website.
  • Make sure your major is listed correctly in your Admissions Portal. If your major is listed incorrectly, e-mail Admissions as soon as possible.
  • Create your Winthrop e-mail account.
  • Complete the Online Housing Application or request Commuter Status Approval through Residence Life.
  • Request your Eagle Card (Winthrop ID card) at least one week before orientation by following the online instructions.  Your ID will be printed and available for you at orientation.  If you wait to order it at the end of orientation you need to be prepared to stand in long lines.  You are strongly encouraged to order ahead to save time.
  • Complete the Winthrop University immunization requirements. To do so, you will need to create a Patient Portal account. In your account, you will be able to complete the required forms, enter your immunization dates, and upload your immunization documentation. Paper forms will NOT be accepted - all documents must be uploaded into the Portal. If you do not complete the requirements before the start of classes, you will be at risk of being charged a non-refundable $50 non-compliance fee. Here is a step-by-step guide to the immunization requirement process. If you have further questions, please contact the Center for Student Wellness (HCS) directly.
  • Review the What to Bring list to prepare for Orientation.

After Orientation

  • Register for your Parking Permit using your Wingspan log-in information.

  • Contact your roommate to plan for move-in.

  • Purchase a Meal Plan, Cafe Cash, and Bookstore Bucks. If you are living on campus, you likely already have a meal plan as part of your housing contract.
  • Register your valuables (laptop, bicycle, etc.) with Winthrop University Police Department.
  • All tuition and fees must be paid (Cashiers Office - cashiersoffice@winthrop.edu) or a payment plan must be established (Student Financial Services - sfs@winthrop.edu) to avoid cancellation of your class schedule.
  • Books can be purchased and/or rented from The Winthrop Bookstore.
  • Download WU LiveSafe App on your smartphone.
  • Residential students can find your PO Box information on Wingspan.
  • Become familiar with the Cultural Events policy and find out information on requirements and upcoming events.
  • You will receive an e-mail after you attend orientation to your Winthrop account with instructions on how to complete the Campus Safety Training program requirements by logging into Wingspan and clicking "Campus Safety Training" under Channels. This training must be completed before the start of the fall semester. More information is available on the Dean of Students webpage. Contact Amy Sharpe with questions.
