Student Events

Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle

At Winthrop, we cherish our rich history. Our treasures and traditions are part of what makes Winthrop such a unique university. Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle is hosted by the Student Alumni Council on the first day of fall semester classes. This interactive event introduces all incoming students to the treasures and traditions of Winthrop. Each student receives The Garnet and Gold book, which outlines the university's history and traditions. Help us carry on Winthrop's history by sharing The Garnet and Gold book.

Ring Ceremony

With the adoption of a new Winthrop ring design in 2003, the university began honoring our ring recipients with a ceremony and reception. The university president or his designee and students presents rings to recipients who are encouraged to invite friends and family to help celebrate this milestone.

UPDATE: Spring 2020 Official Winthrop Ring Distribution & Ordering

In light of the Winthrop University campus being currently closed under the guidance of South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster's Executive Order in response to COVID-19 public health concerns, the 17th Annual Official Winthrop Ring Ceremony that was planned for Sunday, April 19 has been cancelled.

As a result of the 17th Annual Official Winthrop Ring Ceremony being cancelled, the Winthrop Alumni Association is working to expedite the distribution of your Winthrop class ring. All rings ordered from January to March with the expectation of receiving them at the 17th Annual Official Winthrop Ring Ceremony on April 19 will be shipped directly to you.

In order to ensure that your ring is shipped to your preferred address where you can receive this package over the next few months, we ask you to please email Shayna Foxworth, student and young alumni program coordinator, the address where you would like your ring shipped. We cannot ship to P.O. Boxes, so please provide an address where you can receive packages. Please note – If you do not update your address, we cannot ensure that it will be shipped to your permanent address. Pick-ups will not be allowed.

If you were not expecting to receive your ring at the Ring Ceremony please call Jostens Customer Service at 800/854-7464 and check on your order. You will obtain order status and the timeframe on your specific order.

Ring orders can still be placed online, but due to the impact of COVID-19, the production facility manufacturing the rings has been given a “Shelter in Place” order requiring the plant to be closed until at least mid-April. Once the closure mandate has been lifted, all rings will be shipped directly to the ring purchaser. We are uncertain how long the ring production and shipments will take. We will keep you updated as information is available.

Winthrop Ever Stand

Garnet and Gold Fridays

Garnet and Gold Fridays began in the fall of 2007 as a spirit initiative of the Student Alumni Council. The group encourages the entire campus community to promote Winthrop by dressing in garnet and gold clothing every Friday. Members also award prizes for wearing school colors and issue "citations" for those wearing a rival school's gear. Show others your Winthrop pride and join in the fun of Garnet and Gold Fridays.

Ghost Tours

Oral traditions also play an important role in the rich history and culture of Winthrop. In the fall of 2005, the Student Alumni Council began hosting Ghost Tours, an event that explores the campus legends and historical figures that have shaped Winthrop. All proceeds from this special event support Go Gold for Life, the student-giving program associated with the Winthrop Fund. Experience Winthrop as never before and help support your fellow students at the same time!

Grad Finale

Grad Finale is held twice each year for graduating students — February for May graduates and October for December graduates. This event is a partnership between the Student Alumni Council and the Alumni Association. Students are invited to the Winthrop Bookstore where they receive information about alumni benefits and purchase class rings, graduation announcements and regalia. Many campus departments and vendors make this event a success each semester.
