STUDENT PROFILE
Name: Robert Sepheus
Residence: Rock Hill, South Carolina
Degree: Dance
Forty years older than most of his classmates, Robert Sepheus brings an air of professionalism and dedication to his theatre and dance classes.
His career spans national tours, Broadway-caliber productions, cruise line performances, and commercial work, so he brings a wealth of industrial knowledge to the classroom that he is eager to share.
Now a junior, Sepheus started taking classes in 2021 during the pandemic. His goal is to earn his bachelor’s degree and return to cruise life where he will be eligible to apply for jobs attracting talent. “This can be a pipeline for Winthrop students,” he said.
When he’s not at Winthrop, Sepheus cares for his elderly parents.
As a non-traditional student, Sepheus said he has surprised his fellow students when he told them he was 61 years old. His can-do attitude and young spirit give the impression that he is much younger.
His fellow students are amazed to learn that he worked with legends such as dancer and choreographer Frank Hatchett and singer Rick James, both of whom gave him insight into the artistic excellence. As the voice of experience, he tells students to listen to their teachers and choreographers to interpret dance as the teachers see it, not as the students want to perform a piece.
Sepheus’ time so far at Winthrop has provided him a way to update his skills. “I have gained invaluable vocal and dramatic training, refining my versatility as a triple-threat performer,” he said. “I plan to build upon this foundation by actively participating in new works, exploring choreography for musical theatre pieces, and collaborating with faculty and students to produce high-caliber performances.
“I am eager to continue my journey at Winthrop, growing not just as an artist but as a leader in the performing arts community.”
When Sepheus attends class and rehearsal, his attitude is one of discipline, respect and full engagement. “I approach every session with a strong work ethic, ensuring that I am present, prepared and ready to contribute,” he said. “I pay close attention to the choreographer and director, absorbing every detail so that I can execute movement with precision and assist if needed.”
Attendance is a cornerstone of his commitment. “I show up on time, fully warmed up and mentally prepared to work. I respect the time of my instructors and fellow performers by being present and engaged, understanding that every moment in rehearsal is an opportunity for growth,” he said. By setting an example of attentiveness and professionalism, he hopes to encourage others to bring the same level of dedication to their shared craft.
“My goal is to be an asset to every production I am part of, ensuring that my work ethic, attitude and professionalism elevate not only my own performance but the entire ensemble's success,” he said.
Sepheus said his presence in these classes proves that dance and the performing arts are not bound by age. “One's passion, dedication and artistry can thrive well into our 60s and beyond,” he said. “I take pride in showing my younger classmates that longevity in the arts is possible, that discipline and perseverance matter and that every stage of life brings new growth opportunities.”
