About Us

Sustainability is generally defined as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. Therefore, sustainability is to simultaneously advance economic vitality, ecological integrity, and social welfare. Winthrop University is committed to sustainability and to serving as a positive example through sustainable practices.Home Page- Three Dimensions

Every decision and action humans make today has an impact on human and natural systems.  To what extent today's impact has on future generations is the ultimate consideration.  Therefore, we must ask ourselves what do we want the quality of life to be for our children in regards to economic vitality, ecological integrity, and social welfare.  Sustainability is always looking towards the future.

Winthrop is a signatory of the Talloires Declaration and is an institutional member of the National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE), the Carolinas Recycling Association (CRA), and the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
