On March 25, 1976, the student body of Winthrop College selected the Eagle as its first official mascot! According to the News and Reporter from Chester, “The voting was a result of a four-month contest to select a mascot. Students submitted about 60 entries and a committee narrowed the list to 10 for a student body vote. The top three vote-getters were the Eagles, Sandlappers and Cardinals, but neither had a majority. A runoff election was held Thursday with the Eagles outpolling the Sandlappers.” Winthrop student Maria Charalambides of Rock Hill won $100 from the Student Government Association for her graphic design, which is reflected on the 2026 Homecoming T-shirt.
