High School Media, Theatre & Dance Workshop
Each September, the Department of Mass Communication partners with Theatre and Dance
to deliver workshops for high school students, teachers, and advisers. Mass Communication students are
invited to assist faculty and field professionals as they share educational opportunities
and potential career pathways in the broadcast journalism, mass communication, and
integrated mass marketing. This is an excellent volunteer opportunity to share the
Winthrop experience and connect with the community. Contact your faculty adviser for
more information.
Mass Communication Week
Media experts from across the nation gather to share professional expertise and industry
advances with classes and student
groups. Guest speakers have included editors of magazines and newspapers, heads
of public relations agencies, television producers and anchors, lawyers,
and political press representatives.Throughout this week-long event, students have
the opportunity to meet and talk with speakers one-on-one or in small groups. This
annual signature event is planned and hosted by the Department of Mass Communication
faculty and students.
Mass Communication Recognition Dinner
An evening of fine dining and entertainment honors student's academic achievements
and accomplishment each April. Planned by students in the Public Relations Principles
class, this event celebrates the Department of Mass Communication graduating seniors,
those who have made notable contributions to the Department, as well as University
student publications. Prominent community members attend and open the door for students
to network throughout the evening. Dress is business casual.
Mass Communication Undergraduate Symposium
Launched in 2014, students are selected by faculty to present academic projects that
feature rigorous research in the field of communication. The event is hosted in April
and displays projects cultivated in class or with the guidance of a mentor.
