Message from the Chair

Dr. Devon FitzgeraldWelcome to the Department of English at Winthrop University!

If you’re here, you’re probably someone who notices language, how it works, how it persuades, how it shapes the world around you. Maybe you already love reading and writing. Maybe you’re still figuring that out. Either way, this is a place where that curiosity becomes something you can build with.

As an English major, you won’t just read books and write essays; you’ll learn how to think critically, analyze complex ideas, and communicate clearly. These are the skills employers consistently ask for, and they’re the ones that will carry you across careers, industries, and opportunities.

While you are here, you’ll take classes that ask you to explore, question, and create.

From literary traditions like the Gothic to courses in writing for new media, digital rhetoric, and creative storytelling across platforms, you’ll develop as a writer and thinker in ways that are both practical and imaginative. Explore our courses and program options

Our graduates go on to careers in education, publishing, law, business, technical writing, digital media, and more. Our secondary education students have a 100% job placement rate, and many of our majors continue on to graduate and professional schools. Our alumni are also excelling in fields like technical writing, corporate communications, game and web design, social media management, publishing, business, and even human resources.  See career pathways and outcomes

You won’t do this work alone, and you won’t do it only in the classroom.

Our students:

  • present at conferences
  • publish their writing
  • complete internships
  • work in our Writing Center
  • study abroad

They also find community in organizations like the Literary Society, Creative Writing Club and Sigma Tau Delta. Learn about internships, research, and student organizations

Our faculty are scholars, writers, and teachers but just as importantly, they’re mentors.

They’ll challenge you, support you, and help you shape your goals into something real. Meet our faculty

You can make this major your own. Pursue focus areas like creative or professional writing, contribute to interdisciplinary programs like Medieval Studies, or add a micro-certificate in Technical Writing to build experience in professional communication.

This is a flexible, challenging major that meets you where you are, and helps you grow into where you want to go.

We’re glad you’re here.
Now let’s see what you can do.
