Message from the Chair

Welcome to Winthrop University's Department of English! Here you'll find professors and students who love to read and who love to write. What we do in the Department of English is not only intellectually and emotionally fulfilling; it also is important. The world is changing, and as you prepare for the mysterious job market of the twenty-first century, it is good not simply to write well, but to be an excellent writer; not simply to read quickly and fluently, but to have the capability to read and comprehend any document, no matter how complex; not simply to understand the dilemmas of life and work, but to develop the ability to think critically about seemingly impossible problems.

Recent studies continue to show that employers are looking for Humanities majors because of their reading, writing, and thinking skills, and you can gain those here. We also pride ourselves on the individual attention and mentoring that we give to each student, and on offering a myriad of courses that will both challenge and inspire you. Ranging from Beowulf to Harry Potter, from Shakespeare's Renaissance plays to the works of the Harlem Renaissance, from non-fiction prose to advanced fiction writing workshops, our courses offer opportunities for you to explore what it means to be a human in an ever-changing world.

We are so glad to have you join our community of scholars! You'll find inspiration in this department as well as a place to anchor yourself before you set sail on your life adventures of writing, teaching, leading, and becoming. As Anna Quindlen has observed, "Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home."

Welcome home.
