The Department seeks to offer students opportunities to analyze literatures from a variety of time periods, national origins, and cultural perspectives; an understanding of how language functions; an appreciation for and understanding of the aesthetic qualities of literary and nonliterary genres and forms; knowledge of multiple interpretive and critical tools; and the ability to use language creatively and effectively for exposition, persuasion, instruction, and/or artistic effect.
