Each year, Winthrop recognizes an alumnus for selfless dedication of time, energy,
and talent in service to others. The Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award captures this
high honor.
This year's 2017 recipient is Larry Durham Sr., a U.S. Air Force veteran who earned
a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and an M.B.A., both from Winthrop.
The owner of Larry Durham-State Farm Insurance in Lancaster, S.C., Durham has been
an agent since 1989. He also has worked as a loan officer and assistant vice president
at Bankers Trust and as director of Winthrop's Small Business Development Center.
A former Winthrop Board of Trustees member and former board member of the S.C. Commission on Higher Education, Durham
has spent more than a decade involved in civic and community work in Lancaster County
and for South Carolina. He is a past chairman of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce
and past president of the Lancaster County United Way and the Lancaster Rotary Club.
He is a member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Active with his alma mater, Durham currently serves on the Graduate School Community Advisory Board. He served as a member of the Distinction Campaign Steering Committee in 2011, a
member of the Alumni Executive Board in 1991, the Black Alumni Advisory Committee in 1992, and the Alumni Legislative
Advocacy network in 1993. He received the Pinnacle Distinguished Alumni Award in 2011
from the College of Business Administration. Durham and his wife Madeleine Dorn Durham '74 '88 have been generous donors to
a number of Winthrop programs and projects, including the Winthrop Fund, the Graduate
Incentive Scholarship, and the Center for Economic Development.
