Frequently Asked Questions (COVID-19)

The Office of Recreational Services collaborated with health experts from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) to develop the best procedures and modifications to allow the facility to re-open while also keeping Winthrop students, our members, and the Recreational Services staff safe.

General Procedures

The only spaces in the West Center that are closed are the racquetball courts and the saunas.  All other spaces are open for student and member use during the designated hours of operation.  Please check the corresponding schedules for times the pool and climbing wall are available.

Yes.  Masks are required in all areas of the building, with two situational exceptions.  Anyone using a cardio machine will not be required to wear a mask; however, it remains a recommendation for those individuals.  Masks are also recommended, but not required, for Group Fitness participants.  Group Fitness classes will also adhere to additional physical distancing guidelines.  Masks are required in the West Center for all other activity and classroom spaces (i.e. weight room, indoor track, gym courts, etc.).

Yes.  The main entrance, directly across from the DiGiorgio Campus Center, will be utilized as the entrance, and the external doors in the commuter lounge will be utilized as the exit.

Yes.  Maximum occupancies for each space can be found on the academic class schedules posted at (or near) the entrance to the specific space.  The Recreational Services student staff will be limiting spaces in accordance with these occupancies (for recreational use).

Recreational Services will be using the extra time in the mornings (before opening) and at night (after closing) to thoroughly clean the fitness equipment and any high-touch or high-use spaces.

Student staff members will thoroughly clean the fitness equipment, as well as any high-touch or high-use spaces, (1) during their shifts, (2) each night after the facility has closed, and (3) each morning prior to the facility being opened.  It is highly recommended that patrons be diligent about wiping down all equipment before and after using it.  Wipes and cleaning solutions are available throughout the building for this purpose.

Front Desk Modifications & Student Staff

No.  Equipment checkout and towel service is suspended until further notice.  All students and members are welcome to bring in their own equipment and towels.

No.  Guest passes will not be available until further notice.  This is an intentional effort to minimize the number of outside visitors in the West Center.  We will only be open for students and members this semester.

Temperature checks will be completed for all student employees as they come in to work.  Employees with temperatures exceeding 100.4 degrees will be sent home.  Temperature checks on patrons and students will follow university guidance.

Yes.  All student staff members will wear masks at all times.  Plexiglass sneeze guards have been installed at each computer to protect both the staff member and the patron.

Locker Rooms & Water Access

Yes.  Showers, bathrooms, and rented lockers will be available.  Day-use lockers (in the commuter lounge) will not be available.  Remember to bring your own towel!

No.  Saunas (located in the Faculty / Staff locker rooms) will be closed until further notice.

Access to water drinking fountains is restricted at this time; however, the bottle filling station on the first floor, along with sinks in all bathrooms, may be used to re-fill empty bottles.

Facility Spaces

No.  Some cardio machines have been temporarily moved to the basketball courts, to allow for better spacing and physical distancing of patrons while also maximizing the number of available machines.  Other equipment and machines that were not able to be moved may be restricted (with signage) to allow for appropriate physical distancing.

Yes.  The West Center is an academic facility, hosting a variety of academic classes in many different environments.  Because of the established occupancy limits, some spaces may be unavailable for recreational use while classes are held in those spaces.  This includes (but is not limited to) fitness studio spaces, the climbing wall, the weight room, basketball courts, the pool, and the track.

Contact sports, such as volleyball and pick-up basketball, are not permitted.  These activities hold a high potential for contact between individuals, increasing the possible spread of COVID-19.  Students and members may bring their own basketballs and shoot with one or two friends that accompanied them to the facility.

Swimmers will need to stay in their chosen lane while in the pool.  When on the deck, all patrons will need to adhere to physical distancing and wear a mask.

On days in which there are no evening academic climbing classes, the climbing wall will offer both top rope and bouldering climbing, using a rotation of harnesses and climbing equipment that will allow for proper sanitation and quarantining of the equipment between use.  Along with per-use santitation and quarantining strategies, all equipment will be thoroughly cleaned each Friday for use the following week.
