Frequently Asked Questions (COVID-19)

The Office of Recreational Services collaborated with health experts from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) to develop the best procedures and modifications to allow the facility to re-open while also keeping Winthrop students, our members, and the Recreational Services staff safe.

General Procedures

Face coverings are required in buildings.  Anyone using cardio machines will not be required to wear a face covering.  Since additional physical distancing guidelines are being adhered to in Group Fitness classes, those particiapting will not be required to wear a face covering.  Face coverings are required in the West Center for all other activity and classroom spaces (i.e. weight room, indoor track, gym courts, etc.).

Yes.  The main entrance, directly across from the DiGiorgio Campus Center, will be utilized as entrance and exit.  The external doors in the commuter lounge will be utilized as exit only.

Student staff members will thoroughly clean the fitness equipment, as well as any high-touch or high-use spaces.  It is highly recommended that patrons be diligent about wiping down all equipment before and after using it.  Wipes and cleaning solutions are available throughout the building for this purpose.

Front Desk Modifications & Student Staff

Yes.  Equipment checkout and towel service is now available.  Student staff members will thoroughly clean items after patron use.  Students and members are still welcome to bring in their own equipment and towels if desired.

No.  Guest passes will not be available until further notice.  This is an intentional effort to minimize the number of outside visitors in the West Center.  We will only be open for students and members this semester.

Face coverings are required in buildings.  Plexiglass sneeze guards have been installed at each computer to protect both the staff member and the patron.

Locker Rooms & Water Access

Yes.  Showers, bathrooms, and rented lockers will be available.

No.  Saunas (located in the Faculty / Staff locker rooms) will be closed until further notice.

Access to water drinking fountains is available; however, do NOT drink directly from them.  Use them only to fill water bottles.

Facility Spaces

No.  Some cardio machines have been temporarily moved to the basketball courts, to allow for better spacing and physical distancing of patrons.  Other equipment and machines that were not able to be moved may be restricted (with signage) to allow for appropriate physical distancing.

Swimmers will need to stay in their chosen lane while in the pool.  When on the deck, all patrons will need to adhere to physical distancing.
