Winthrop University was among six schools selected to participate in the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators (NAGDCA) Retirement Knowledge Quiz Bowl.  In addition to participating in the competition, each student had two mentors, one from a state retirement system and the other from a financial company.  Associate Professor of Finance and Director of the Financial Planning program, Dr. Philip Gibson CFP stated "This was our first year participating in this competition, we didn't know what to expect.  Although our team did not win, I am very proud of our students, they represented our financial planning program, the college of business and Winthrop University very well."

The other teams participating in the competition were: University of Texas Rio Grande, Texas A&M University, University of Missouri, University of Georgia (2nd place), and Texas Tech University (1st place).
