Department Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students showing high levels of proficiency in foreign languages. Contact Dr. Adam Glover for more information.

In addition to departmental scholarships, membership in two honor societies is offered to high achieving students: Pi Delta Phi for French and Sigma Delta Pi for Spanish.

The College of Arts and Sciences also offer scholarship opportunities.


External Grants & Scholarships

Students enrolled or interested in a language program at Winthrop may apply for external grants and scholarships offered by third-party organizations. Eligibility and availability may vary, but we encourage our students to explore the following opportunities:

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Program (U.S. Department of Education)


  • Amount: $5,000 - $10,000 for undergraduate students
  • Next available award: FY 2018

Critical Languages Scholarship (U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs)


  • Available to undergraduate students enrolled in a four-year university
  • Programs available in limited languages
  • Overseas and cultural immersion program

Boren Awards for International Study


  • Amount: $8,000 - $20,000 (varies by length of program)
  • Programs available in limited languages
  • Ideal for students interested in working in National Security

IES Abroad Scholarships


  • Amount: $5,000 (can vary by program length)
  • For undergraduate language students to study abroad

American Society of French Academic Palmes Summer Scholarships


  • Amount: $4,000
  • For French sophomores and juniors who have not had the opportunity to study abroad
