Faculty & Staff Profiles

Dr. Valerie Jepson is an Associate Professor of Spanish and holds a PhD in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Florida. She directs the language education program at Winthrop University and teaches Spanish courses at all levels, but particularly enjoys La Cocina Latina, Spanish Phonetics and Phonology, and language methods and internship classes. She supervises Winthrop students teaching Spanish or French in elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. Additionally, she coordinates the Dual Language Immersion program which includes regularly updating the curriculum to address the abilities of this unique group of students.

Her research interests center on second language acquisition. Previous studies have included analyzing sound data from second language learners in immersed environments and the effects of monologues in the secondary language classroom. Her current project compares the skills of traditional language learners and semi-immersed language learners.

Dr. Jepson hosts Feria, a language competition for middle and high school Spanish and French students.

Prior to coming to Winthrop, Dr. Jepson taught Spanish at the high school level in California.
