World Languages and Cultures

About Us

The requirement for the B.A. in Modern Languages, with a concentration in French or Spanish, is 36 semester hours above the elementary level. Required courses include classes in composition and conversation, one literature class, and one culture/civilization class. In addition, two courses in another language are required.

Proficiency in language skills must be demonstrated before graduation by completing successfully the ACTFL oral proficiency interview. For details of this requirement, see the statement in the current catalog.

Teacher certification programs are available in French and Spanish. A minor in French, German, or Spanish requires 18 semester hours above the elementary level, six of which must be above the 299-level.

The department encourages majors and minors to include a study abroad experience in their course of studies.  Read about the Global Learning Initiative for sample four-year plans and more information.

Outstanding Student Work

This semester, Dr. Jepson's SPAN 201 students were asked to design a tri-fold brochure to highlight attractions and tourism information about a Spanish-speaking country. All of the students did amazing work, but these are a few of our favorites!

Spain - Breanna Boyd

Puerto Rico - Charity Moore

Argentina - Elle Sullivan
