Beginning in Fall 2025, Winthrop University’s Department of Biology will discontinue admissions to the traditional two-year Master of Science in Biology program, which includes both thesis and non-thesis tracks. However, we will continue to accept applications for the one-year accelerated MS program for the 2026–2027 academic year.
Winthrop’s Master of Science in Biology program is distinguished by its commitment to academic excellence and professional development. The program has a proven record of preparing graduates for successful entry into PhD programs, medical schools, and a broad spectrum of careers in the scientific and healthcare sectors.
Students enrolled in the MS in Biology program receive comprehensive training across diverse areas of biological science. Opportunities for specialization include conservation biology, behavioral ecology, cancer research, molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Graduate students work closely with faculty advisors who hold doctoral degrees in their respective fields and are actively engaged in research.
Class sizes are intentionally small—typically 12 students or fewer—fostering meaningful interaction and mentorship between students and faculty. Our graduate faculty are dedicated educators and scholars, many of whom have received recognition for excellence in teaching and research..
