DEPARTMENT of BIOLOGY

Accelerated Master of Science Degree in Biology

Beginning Fall 2025, Winthrop University’s Department of Biology will discontinue admissions to the traditional two-year Master of Science in Biology program, which previously included both thesis and non-thesis tracks.

We will, however, continue to accept applications for the one-year accelerated M.S. program for the 2026–2027 academic year.

This accelerated program offers advanced coursework and research opportunities leading to a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Biology. Undergraduate Biology majors may complete up to nine credit hours of graduate-level coursework during their senior year, which can be applied toward the M.S. degree.

Through this pathway, students can earn both a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) in Biology within five years. Upon successful completion of one year of graduate study, students will meet the requirements for both degrees—preparing them for competitive academic and professional careers in the biological sciences.
