Time flies!

Can you believe it’s been a month since Convocation? The days are flying by, and we’re entering that time of year where the events calendar is full. Since my last update, I’ve met with our new SGA officers (such enthusiasm!), signed our annual Town and Gown partnership (so important!), attended our Student-Made Rock Hill launch (impressively creative!), celebrated Cooper for National Dog Day (let’s be honest, every day is about Cooper), and so much more. I’d like to share with you some upcoming events of interest:

NAMIWalk

On Saturday, Oct. 4, at 8 a.m. I invite you to join me in participating in the United Day of Hope National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)Walk at Cherry Park. The NAMIWalk promotes awareness of mental health and reduces the stigma, raises funds for free mental health programs and builds community to let people know they are not alone. If you are interested in joining the Winthrop walking team, please click “Join our Team” at the link below and register to show up on our official roster. You can also walk without registering. Just come out and join us, and look for the Winthrop Eagles gear that our team will be wearing. https://www.namiwalks.org/teams/78692

Family Day
This year’s Family Day also will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4. I look forward to welcoming our families to campus as they visit their students and participate in a variety of fun and informative activities. If you’re on campus that Saturday, please extend a warm Winthrop welcome to those visiting us.

U.S. Disc Golf Championship
For the 27th year, Winthrop will host the U.S. Disc Golf Championship out at the Athletics, Recreation and Research Area. More than 100 players and thousands of spectators are expected to be here for the Oct. 9-12 event. There will be evening concerts, food vendors and much more. If you’d like to see the championship in action, you may purchase tickets here.

United Way Campaign
Each year we hold a university-wide effort to support United Way of York County (UWYC) and its bold goal to help 3,000 York County families become financially stable by 2030, a goal they’ve named ‘Power to Thrive.’ Winthrop’s campus community can help make that goal come to fruition. Did you know that the university has a notable history with United Way: we place student interns at UWYC annually; half of UWYC employees are proud Winthrop alumni; and nearly 90 percent of United Way’s partner agencies receive some sort of faculty assistance from Winthrop each year. This year’s campaign timeline is Oct. 20-31. If you are able to do so, I encourage you to join me in supporting this year’s effort by completing the online pledge form. If a paper giving form is preferred, please reach out to Nicole Chisari who is serving as our United Way ambassador for the third year.

Finally, please note that we will be conducting another “Let Your Voice Be Heard” employee engagement survey soon. Our last survey was offered in 2023. As a result of the information provided by you at that time, we have, among other things, increased the opportunities for training and professional development for faculty and staff by providing online learning platforms that offer thousands of opportunities to enhance skills; began providing employees with annual total compensation statements to provide a complete understanding of your compensation package and benefits; and we are in the process of procuring consultants for an assessment and review of current staffing levels, organizations structures and process efficiencies. Once again, we are working with Korn Ferry, from whom you will receive an email when the survey opens on Oct. 20. Those who have not yet completed the survey will receive a reminder before the survey closes on Oct. 31. Thank you in advance for participating. Your feedback is vitally important to help make Winthrop the best workplace it can be!

Thanks to each of you for everything that you are doing to ensure that we have a successful fall semester. We’re off to a great start!
