The Winthrop University Board of Trustees met September 16-17, 2026. I am happy to say that we had a fruitful meeting with a few action items and many updates that indicate the positive trajectory we are on as an institution.
Among the Wednesday updates were an enrollment report indicating a 4% increase in overall enrollment now with census coming on October 5 for a final headcount across all of our enrollment “buckets,” an academic update on new programs, including soft launch of our health sciences degree this fall, a tentative timeline for the Fort Mill project, and the boost to the advanced manufacturing engineering program by a recent gift from the City of Rock Hill, as well as potential upcoming opportunities and decisions we may need to make related to accreditation. Trustees also heard about Eagle Books and dining services under Chartwells, fundraising and athletics highlights, facilities projects, and financial reports and budget updates, including our FY2028 State Budget Requests.
On Thursday the full board took the following action:
Approved a resolution honoring alumna Kathy Bigham’s long and meritorious service to the Board of Trustees and Winthrop. The board vice chair has completed her latest term and is planning an upcoming move to the coast.
Approved a contract, currently pending state procurement approval, with Faulkner Development & Engineering for $674,000 to address the needed Winthrop Lake Dam Improvements. This state-funded project will modernize and address deficiencies in the 73-year-old dam that have impacted our ability to control lake water levels for some time.
Approved the first cohort of staff emeriti, a new honor recommended through Staff Conference for retiring staff nominees with at least 10 years of service and extraordinary contributions to Winthrop. Read more about the designation and honorees.
In addition to the meetings, I was very pleased that trustees had the opportunity over lunch to meet and engage with our new Presidential Ambassadors who were introduced by way of a fun video as well. You will recall that this new program grew out of our strategic plan Phase 2 initiatives, and you actually helped identify and nominate these outstanding representatives of the Winthrop experience.
