ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The Winthrop University Board of Trustees unanimously approved the first class of emeriti staff during its Sept. 17 board meeting. The four inaugural recipients of the emeriti staff recognition have 113 years of combined service to the institution.
They are:

*Ben Roach, Engineering Associate
President Edward Serna ’02 formally recommended the four staff members to trustees
who granted the final approval. “Winthrop wanted a way to recognize significant staff
contributions and dedication to the institution. Faculty members who meet criteria
are given emeriti status upon retirement; we wanted to confer a similar, meaningful
show of appreciation to those staff members who have exhibited extraordinary commitment
to Winthrop and made a positive institutional impact during their time here,” Serna
said. “I appreciate the board’s full support of this new distinction.”
Qualifications for Staff Emeriti
To be considered for emeriti staff status, the nominee must be a current staff member who served for a minimum of 10 years in a benefits-eligible, full-time classified/unclassified/grant-funded position, and who has announced his or her retirement with an effective date on or before June 30 in the current fiscal year. In addition, the nominee must have demonstrated contributions throughout his or her career at the university and must not have had any disciplinary actions within the past 10 years.
The process begins with a formal nomination submitted by the employee’s divisional vice president to the Office of Human Resources. Those nominees who meet the criteria are then submitted to Staff Assembly for consideration. If endorsed by Staff Assembly, the nominees’ names are then sent to the president for his endorsement and recommendation to the board of trustees, which ultimately gives final approval.
The emeriti staff also will have continued access to Dacus Library, a special retiree rate for membership to Winthrop’s recreational facilities, free tickets to many athletics events, and the ability to receive Winthrop newsletters and updates from the Division of Advancement upon request. They are granted extended additional privileges, including:
A special identification card upon request identifying their emeriti status;
Their name included in a formal resolution conferring emeriti status approved by the
Winthrop Board of Trustees;
A special letter from Winthrop’s president acknowledging emeriti status; and
Complimentary campus parking, with annual parking passes available upon request from
Campus Police.
