At Winthrop University, students have the opportunity to study abroad across the globe - from Central America to Europe, Asia to Africa, and everywhere in between. Our programs span diverse regions including the Southern Cone (such as Argentina), Australia, and beyond.

Whether you're interested in a summer adventure, a semester-long journey, or a full academic year abroad, Winthrop offers flexible options to match your academic goals and personal interests. Each experience is designed to complement your degree and enrich your global perspective.

What sets Winthrop apart is our strong integration of study abroad into the university curriculum. These global expereinces aren't just an add-on - they're an essential part of well-rounded education, helping students grow academically, personally, and professionally.

Semester-Long Study Abroad

In today's interconnected world, becoming a global citizen is essential for effective, ethical social work practice. Studying abroad not only enhances cultural competence but also empowers students to analyze social issues from a global perspective.

To support this development, Winthrop's Department of Social Work offers study abroad opportunities that count toward social work course credit. In addition, the department has built flexible degree completion plans that make it possible for students to spend a full-semester abroad without delaying graduation.

These experiences prepare future social workers to engage thoughtfully and effectively with diverse communities - both at home and around the world.

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Opportunities

The Department of Social work also offers faculty-led study abroad programs, designed as short-term experiences that typically last one to two weeks. These programs can take place during any part of the academic year and are often centered around specific social work topcs or themes.

Short-term study abroad programs allow students to explore key issues within an international context while earning 1 to 3 credit hours. These immersive experiences offer valuable global perspectives and are ideal for students who may not be able to commit to a full semester abroad.

In addition to student benefits, faculty-led programs also support faculty development and help raise the international profile of Winthrop University. Social work faculty have previously led programs in countries such as Nicaragua, St. Vincent, and Japan.
