A number of advocacy organizations exists dedicated to supporting the mission of higher education in the United States. Their work is vital to our recognizing the role of higher education in our society. The following are among the most prominent such organizations. Please follow the links for further information.


American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Another valuable resource is the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Many important research projects on trends in higher education are found here, some focusing on specific areas such as the humanities or the STEM fields.
American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U)

This is one of the most powerful and comprehensive sources of information for all things academic. It includes a wealth of information and further resources pertaining specifically to Liberal Education and its promotion. The pages under "what is a liberal education" include resources for making the "economic case" and for making the "civic case" for liberal ed. Liberal Education and America's Promise (LEAP) comprises a national advocacy campaign for liberal education in our country. AACU's public opinion research site contains valuable empirical data.
American Council on Education (ACE)
The American Council on Education provides discussion and information on a wide variety of higher ed topics.
Association of American Universities (AAU)
The AAU is a consortium of 62 leading research universities in the US and Canada. This site contains information on research in higher education, education policy across the arts and sciences, publications and op-ed pieces, and more.
The Chronicle of Higher Education
The Chronicle of Higher Education is the foremost publication in the area of higher ed. In addition to its news-stream, this contains a repository for facts and figures on higher ed.
The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC)
CIC is the major national service organization for all small and mid-sized, independent, liberal arts colleges and universities in the U.S. It provides seminars and workshops assisting institutions in improving educational offerings, administrative and financial performance, and institutional visibility.
Phi Beta Kappa Society
The Phi Beta Kappa society is an honorary society devoted to higher education. Check out the interactive "Arts and Sciences are Key ToolKit." It provides valuable information as well as ideas for advocacy and action at all levels of engagement.
The Science Coalition
The Science Coalition is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of more than 50 of the nation's leading public and private research universities dedicated to sustaining the federal government's investment in basic scientific research as a means to stimulate the economy, spur innovation and drive America's global competitiveness.
