Time flies!

Can you believe it’s been a month since Convocation? The days are flying by, and we’re entering that time of year when the events calendar is full. Since my last update, I’ve signed our annual Town and Gown partnership, helped induct our newest SGA members, held my first student office hours sessions of the semester, attended a press conference with the city in which we received $250,000 towards our advanced manufacturing engineering program (pending CHE and SACSCOC approval), stopped by several events such as Meet the Firms and the M.S.W. 20th anniversary ceremony, and so much more. There’s a lot of great stuff happening! Take a look below at some items of interest:

Q&A

We’re now on our third set of Q&As that provide more insight on hot topics. Past topics have covered the Business Center and enrollment, and this month’s edition features our popular dual enrollment program led by Erica Panton. I’m happy to report that I’ve seen this program in action on campus and in our home! Our 11th grader, Anna Kate, is in the dual enrollment program and is taking classes on campus. It’s been exciting watching her get a feel for college coursework. Thank you, Erica, for taking the time to answer some questions about the program. Read the Q&As here. Next month will feature Q&As with Director of Club Sports Mikaela Sites.

Family Day
This year’s Family Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3. I look forward to welcoming our families to campus as they visit their students and participate in a variety of fun and informative activities. If you’re on campus that Saturday, please extend a warm Winthrop welcome to those visiting us. Thanks to everyone involved for organizing and planning such a great day for our students and their families.

U.S. Disc Golf Championship
For the 28th year, Winthrop will host the U.S. Disc Golf Championship out at the Athletics, Recreation and Research Area. More than 100 players and thousands of spectators are expected to be here for the Oct. 8-11 event. There will be evening concerts, food vendors and much more. If you’d like to see the championship in action, you may purchase tickets here.

NAMIWalk

On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 8:30 a.m. I invite you to join me in participating in the United Day of Hope National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)Walk. This year’s walk will be held at the Winthrop Lake. The NAMIWalk promotes awareness of mental health and reduces the stigma, raises funds for free mental health programs and builds community to let people know they are not alone. If you are interested in joining the Winthrop walking team, please click “Join our Team” at this link and register to show up on our official roster. You can also walk without registering. Just come out and join us, and look for the Winthrop Eagles gear that our team will be wearing.

United Way Campaign
Each year we hold a university-wide effort to support United Way of York County (UWYC) and its bold goal to help 3,000 York County families become financially stable by 2030, a goal they’ve named ‘Power to Thrive.’ With a long history of various types of support to UWYC, Winthrop’s campus community can help make their bold goal come to fruition. This year’s campaign timeline is Oct. 19-30. If you are able to do so, I encourage you to join me in supporting this year’s effort by completing the online pledge form. If a paper giving form is preferred, please reach out to Lydia Johnson who is serving as our United Way ambassador this year.

Thanks to each of you for everything that you are doing to ensure that we have a successful fall semester. We’re off to a great start!
