Faculty and Staff - March 23, 2021

Dear Campus Community,

Like many of you, I have spent the last several days processing last week’s senseless and tragic murders in Atlanta, and my condolences go out to the victims’ families and those that loved them.

As we have learned, six of the eight victims were Asian women, which escalates an alarming trend of attacks against people of Asian or Pacific Islander descent over the last year in our country, a trend that understandably has millions on edge while going about their days and lives.

At Winthrop, we value diversity and all that the word represents. Diversity is one of Winthrop’s five core values, along with excellence, service, community and leadership. Our commitment to, and appreciation for, diversity includes respecting the diversity of all cultures. Winthrop is proud to be a “home away from home” for Asians, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and other people of color.

I encourage students to contact Counseling Services at 323-2206 or via the Medicat Patient Portal and faculty/staff to utilize the free counseling services offered through the Employee Assistance Program if professional assistance is needed to work through feelings that these recent events have caused.

As always, I thank you for being a valued and respected member of this Winthrop family.

Sincerely,

George
