I am writing today to share two important leadership announcements that reflect our institution’s ongoing commitment to excellence, strategic momentum, and continuity of leadership.
First, following her remarkable achievements and sustained leadership in the Division of Enrollment Management and Marketing, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Amanda James as Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing, effective February 1, 2026. Dr. James has led the Office of Admissions with passion, vision, and strategic acumen that have yielded extraordinary results. Under her leadership, Winthrop has achieved historic enrollment milestones - including record-setting numbers of applications and admitted students - as well as substantial gains in both new freshman and transfer enrollment. Her innovative partnerships and deep commitment to student success have strengthened our recruitment efforts and expanded access for students both in-state and beyond. In this new role, Dr. James will work closely with Dr. Joseph Miller in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition that maintains continuity of leadership and strategic focus within the division. Her appointment will position the Division of Enrollment Management and Marketing to continue building positive momentum and advancing our university’s enrollment goals and strategic plan.
In addition, I am pleased to announce the permanent appointment of Ms. Beverly Gilliam as Vice President for Human Resources, effective immediately. Since assuming the role of Interim Vice President for Human Resources following Lisa Cowart’s retirement in September, Beverly has demonstrated exceptional leadership, thoughtful stewardship, and remarkable dedication to our faculty and staff. In her interim capacity, Beverly has taken the lead on key initiatives - including advancing the professional development priorities of the division and overseeing the recent employee satisfaction survey - with professionalism and effectiveness that have strengthened our Human Resources function and its impact across campus. Her deep experience in employee relations, benefits administration, and strategic HR practice - coupled with her commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive workplace culture - gives me full confidence in her ability to serve successfully in this role. It is with great pleasure that we remove the “interim” designation from her title, recognizing her accomplishments and entrusting her with this permanent leadership responsibility.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Amanda James and Ms. Beverly Gilliam for these well-deserved appointments. Their leadership, dedication, and commitment to Winthrop University’s mission are deeply valued, and I look forward to their continued contributions as members of the university’s senior leadership team.
