Peer mentors play a vital role in supporting the academic, social, and personal development of undergraduate students, especially those who are new to college life. As fellow students who have recently navigated similar experiences, peer mentors offer relatable guidance, encouragement, and practical advice that can ease the transition to college.
They help demystify the hidden curriculum of higher education by sharing tips on time management, study strategies, campus resources, and effective communication with professors. Peer mentors also serve as role models, demonstrating resilience, leadership, and successful academic habits. This near-peer relationship fosters a sense of belonging and confidence that can positively impact retention, academic performance, and overall student well-being.
In addition to academic benefits, peer mentoring can help students build community, form friendships, and feel more connected to the institution, key factors in a satisfying and successful undergraduate experience.
