Dr. Muhammet Asil is a political science scholar who grew up in a small town along Turkey’s Black Sea coast and has been on a journey ever since. He spent his teenage years at a boarding school in Istanbul and went on to study Sociology at Bosphorus University in the same city.

He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Loyola University Chicago. His primary research area is the ethics of forced displacement, focusing on the moral responsibilities of political communities toward forcibly displaced people, particularly refugees. His work has been published in the Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy, and he is also involved in refugee-related volunteer work beyond the classroom. He is currently developing a series of articles that examine the intersection of responsibility, political behavior, and international theory in the context of displacement.

Dr. Asil has been teaching since 2018. Before joining Winthrop University in August 2025, he taught a wide range of political theory and international relations courses at Loyola University Chicago and Augustana University. His teaching portfolio includes classes on the United Nations and international organizations, nuclear security, refugee ethics, Middle East politics, international political philosophy, ancient political thought, and introductory courses in government and political theory.

When he's not working on research or teaching, you’ll likely find him hiking, biking, cooking, or binge-watching classic shows.
