What is a CMS?

A web content management system is a CMS designed to simplify the publication of web content to websites, in particular allowing content creators to submit content without requiring technical knowledge of programming languages.

Why did Winthrop go to a CMS?

In order to meet the needs of the schools, departments and offices within the Winthrop community, Winthrop University has adopted a content management system (CMS). This new system will ensure that the development of the university's website maintains the high standards necessary to engage today's online users. The content management system is a web-based application that allows all authors—regardless of previous web experience—to create professional, attractive websites that are easy to navigate and adhere to the standards set forth by Winthrop University. The CMS allows authors to concentrate on content rather than design, freeing them to focus on providing audiences with the most relevant and up-to-date information about our university's departments.

What are the benefits/goals of a CMS?

A content management system will allow Winthrop to do the following:

  • Separate content from layout and design
  • Provide a centrally managed, dynamic, and flexible campus-wide web infrastructure
  • Encourage compliance to meet legal requirements for web content accessibility
  • Implement a familiar editing interface and reduce the need for specialized skills to build and maintain websites
  • Create re-usable content thereby reducing content inconsistencies due to duplicate information across websites
