FAQs

What is WUCE?

The Winthrop University Center for the Environment is an interdisciplinary hub that connects students, faculty, staff, and community partners working towards understanding and solving some of today’s most significant environmental challenges.

Environmental issues require insights from across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. With that in mind, WUCE provides an organizational structure for interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative teaching, community partnerships, and public events.

Who is WUCE?

The Winthrop University Center for the Environment includes students and faculty from all Winthrop's colleges, staff, and local and regional partners. As an interdisciplinary network, the Center for the Environment draws on the expertise of faculty across disciplines whose research and teaching span a wide range of environmental themes.

Where is WUCE?

The Winthrop University Center for the Environment is not housed in a single building; instead, it exists across many spaces. From faculty offices and outdoor learning laboratories on campus to our regional partners in Rock Hill, Charlotte, and beyond, WUCE leverages classroom insights into real-world impacts.

Why build WUCE?

The Winthrop University Center for the Environment is dedicated to fostering collaboration in teaching, research, campus operations, and community engagement. Through these combined efforts we are creating learning and career pathways for students and advancing sustainable, positive change.

I am a student. What can WUCE do for me?

The Winthrop University Center for the Environment is home to several programs on campus, including the BS in Environmental Science, the BA in Environmental Studies, minors in Sustainability, Geography, and Geology, as well as the Micro-Certificate in Geographic Information Systems.

WUCE isn't just about majors and minors, however. It connects students from all disciplines to classes, research opportunities, internships, service opportunities, and careers that address the environment in all its dimensions.  Students are at the center of our mission.

I am a faculty member. What can WUCE do for me?

As an interdisciplinary hub, the Winthrop University Center for the Environment supports teaching and research that examines environmental topics from all disciplinary perspectives. By connecting faculty across the institution, WUCE endeavors to support innovative teaching and research and to help faculty forge meaningful collaborations with community organizations and industries.

The Center for the Environment strengthens the university’s intellectual ecosystem by bringing in expert speakers, hosting interactive workshops, curating student‑led forums, and coordinating community dialogues around pressing environmental challenges.

I am a community member. What can WUCE do for me?

The Winthrop University Center for the Environment extends the university’s impact beyond campus by hosting public events and connecting community groups and businesses with faculty whose expertise can support their environmental goals. Students contribute through internships and applied projects that strengthen the region’s environmental resilience and build long-term capacity to address environmental challenges.
