  • Congratulations to our Winthrop University McNair Scholars! Twelve Summer Scholars presented their research at the annual SAEOPP National McNair Research Symposium in June, and five of them received awards and cash prizes: Mattin Avalon, Monejah Black, Nicholle Lewis, Makeyla McCray, and Cayla Odom. Congrats to all Scholars and their mentors!
  • Fifty-five Winthrop students pursued research in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, mathematics, geology, and physics during the 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). Come to see posters of their work on October 4!
  • Eleven students from Winthrop and York Tech were interns in the 2019 WISE (Winthrop Initiative for STEM Educators) Program.
  • Congratulations to 2019 graduate Joey Jennings! Joey won a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, one of only three awarded to sociology students nationwide. Wow!!

  • Over 159 Winthrop undergraduates presented research or creative work at conferences during 2018-2019; at least 74 students won awards for their work. Great job!

Events and Deadlines

  • Tuesday, October 1, 2019, is the deadline to apply for undergraduate research travel funds for travel during the Fall 2019 semester. Please visit the Student Travel Funding page for more information.

  • Please join us on Friday, October 4, 2019, for the 14th Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Poster Session to learn about the research that 55 science and math students pursued this summer and find out about opportunities to start your own research journey! The poster session will be held in Richardson Ballroom (DIGS) from 3-5 p.m.; feel free to stop in any time. Refreshments will be provided.

  • Friday, October 18, 2019, at 5 p.m. is the application deadline for students interested in becoming McNair Scholars. Please visit the McNair application page for more4 information.

  • Abstract submission for our annual printed compilation, Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Activity, and SOURCE 2020 opens on Friday, November 1, 2019. There is one common submission site for both opportunities, which will be accessible from the Abstract Books page. All student projects that have been pursued and/or presented between Summer 2019 and Spring 2020 are eligible for inclusion: please ensure that your work is recognized!

  • Tuesday, November 5, 2019, is the deadline to submit your abstract for Posters on the Hill, an event in which undergraduates from across the nation share their research with lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

  • Friday, December 6, 2019, is the abstract-submission deadline for the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), which will be held March 25-28, 2020 in Montana.
  • Tuesday, February 4, 2020, is the deadline to apply for undergraduate research travel funds for travel during the Spring 2020 semester. Please visit the Student Travel Funding page for more information.

  • Wednesday, March 4, 2020, is the deadline to submit abstracts for inclusion in Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Activity 2020 and presentation or performance at SOURCE 2020.
