Post-Graduate Certificate in School Counseling


This program is for candidates who hold a master's degree in counseling and wish to pursue certification as a school counselor. Upon completion of the program, you will be recommended for a school counseling certification in both South Carolina and North Carolina. Earn your certificate from a program that exceeds rigorous CACREP accreditation standards.

    Requirements for program completion include: 

    • CSDV 613 Foundations and Ethical Issues in School Counseling

      • Offered In-person and Online Fall 2024

    • CSDV 615S School Counseling Program Planning, Consultation & Supervision

      • Offered In-Person Spring 2025, Online Spring 2026

    • CSDV 611 School Counseling Internship I

      • Offered In-Person Fall 2024, Online Fall 2025

    • CSDV 612 School Counseling Internship II

      • Offered In-Person Spring 2025, Online Spring 2026

    • Passing score on the PRAXIS Subject Assessment test for School Counselors

    Additionally, the following 3-9 credit hours will be required only if they were not previously completed during your master's degree program:

    • CSDV 608 Loss, Grief and Crisis Counseling

      • Offered In-Person Spring 2025, Online Spring 2026

    • CSDV 622 Counseling Children and Adolescents

      • Offered In-Person Spring 2025, Online Spring 2026

    • CSDV 623 Advanced Counseling Interventions 

      • Offered In-Person Spring 2025, Online Spring 2026

      Post-Graduate Certificate in School Counseling: No deadline, rolling admission

      This program is for candidates who hold a master's degree in Community, Clinical Mental Health Counseling or Related Fields and wish to pursue certification as a school counselor.

      Upon completion of the program, students will be recommended for a school counseling license in both South Carolina and North Carolina.

      Application requirements include:

      • The online Graduate Studies application with the non-refundable application fee.

      • Must have graduated from a CACREP accredited program or one that follows the CACREP curriculum within the last 10 years

      • Submit transcript for review by the Winthrop Counseling Program faculty 

      • Background check - Submit a complete background check through the following vendor - S2VERIFY Background Check
