Master of Music - Performance Concentration

Application Requirements for all graduate Music Degrees:

1. The online Graduate School application with the non-refundable application fee.

2. Official transcript(s) from all institutions attended for undergraduate and graduate coursework. Transcript must be sent directly to Winthrop's Graduate School office from the issuing institution(s). We cannot accept transcripts (even sealed, official transcripts) from individuals.

3. Have an overall undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

4. Submit an acceptable score on the verbal and quantitative sections of the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination*, the Miller's Analogy Test (MAT), or the PRAXIS II Examination in music education;

NOTE: The GRE/MAT testing requirement is waived if the undergraduate GPA is at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

5. Take entrance diagnostic examinations in music theory and music history/literature. Applicants must demonstrate at least baccalaureate-level competence in music theory and music history/literature. Results of these examinations will be used to plan an appropriate program of studies for the student. In order to address any deficiencies, a student may be required to enroll in courses which will not count toward their graduate degree;

6. Perform an applied entrance audition on the major instrument. Students who do not pass the applied entrance audition will study at the undergraduate level. Graduate-level study must be attained by the end of the first semester. The applied entrance audition and all entrance examinations should be taken prior to the semester of initial enrollment in the graduate program. Auditions and examinations are scheduled in January, May and August of each academic year. Students will not be fully admitted until the audition and examinations have been completed. **

7. Successfully complete a writing sample as prescribed by the graduate program director. Contact the graduate program director for additional information.

 In addition to the general requirements for admission to graduate study in music, the Master of Music degree in performance requires:

1.  All applicants hold a baccalaureate degree with a major in performance, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution.
