Funding and Scholarship Opportunities
Affording Your Future: Financial Incentives for STEM Educators
At Winthrop University, we are committed to removing financial barriers for the next
generation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math leaders. Our specialized
funding opportunities help you focus on your training while significantly reducing
or even eliminating student debt.
Exclusive Grants and Fellowships
- WISER3 Grant ($20,000+): High-achieving STEM students pursuing teacher certification through our Master of
Arts in Teaching (MAT) program can receive substantial support. Scholarships of at
least $20,000 are available to help biology, chemistry, and mathematics majors transition into
the classroom.
- SC Teaching Fellows (Up to $24,000): This prestigious program recruits talented high school seniors into the teaching
profession. Fellows receive $6,000 annually over four years, which includes $300 per year for summer enrichment programs. In
exchange, graduates agree to teach in a South Carolina public school for one year
for every year they receive the fellowship.
Forgivable Loans and Scholarship Enhancements
-
SC Teachers Loan: Future educators can borrow up to $2,500 per year as freshmen and sophomores, and up to $7,500 per year as juniors, seniors, or graduate students. These loans are fully canceled if you
teach a critical need subject—such as mathematics—at a South Carolina public school.
-
SC Scholarship Enhancements ($2,500): If you are an existing LIFE or Palmetto Fellows recipient, you can receive an additional
$2,500 per year by choosing an approved education major. This enhancement typically begins in your
second year of college and requires a commitment to teach in a South Carolina public
school after graduation.
