Dr. Mitchell holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Texas-Austin. Her doctoral research focused on the ecology and feeding behavior of Coreidae. She was a postdoctoral associate in entomology at Louisiana State University from 1980-1984 in the soybean lab. From 1984-1993, she taught part-time at Tarleton State University and Texas Christian University while raising young children; during this time, she also served as co-editor of the Journal of Economic Entomology. She has been on the faculty at Winthrop since 1993, teaching primarily zoology and related courses. Mitchell also serves as an adjunct faculty member at Clemson University in the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences.
She was a Fulbright Research Scholar in India (2001-2002) and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Delhi (2005). She served as the secretary of the International Heteropterists' Society from 2002-2014, served on the Board of Counselors of the Entomological Foundation from 2008-2013, and was the first female president of the South Carolina Entomological Society. She has written or co-authored 30 publications and continues to conduct research in the area of heteropteran feeding behavior and ecology.
