Our program has equipped generations of social studies teachers and continues to provide some of the best teachers in the field. Through courses in content and social studies teaching methods, teacher candidates are prepared to teach history, government, economics, geography, psychology, and/or sociology. Like all teacher certification programs at Winthrop University, candidates have numerous field experiences and practicums in area schools throughout their degree program. At Winthrop one may pursue certification in secondary social studies (grades 9-12) through an undergraduate degree in social studies education or through our Master of Arts in Teaching in social studies.
Our graduates have a 100% job placement rate! They consistently score high on the Praxis Social Studies exam and edTPA (a national, subject-specific teacher performance assessment for new teachers). Many go on to achieve honors in their school districts as Teacher of the Year and continue on to pursue additional advanced degrees.
