Each year, the Environmental Science and Environmental Studies program recognizes outstanding student achievements in resarch, community impact, and program citizenship.
This award recognizes a student who has demonstrated exceptional engagement, curiosity, and growth as an environmental scholar. Recipients show commitment to rigorous inquiry—through research, critical analysis, field or lab work, independent projects, or integrative coursework—and a willingness to tackle complex environmental questions. This award emphasizes intellectual development, creativity, and thoughtful engagement in the research process. Nominations are open to students at any stage of the research process, from early or in‑progress work to completed projects.
Note: This award focuses on scholarly inquiry and research; community engagement or service alone is not sufficient without a strong academic component.
This award honors a student whose work meaningfully connects environmental learning with communities beyond the university. Recipients demonstrate a commitment to collaboration, relationship‑building, and respect for community knowledge and needs. This may include work with local organizations, schools, advocacy groups, or underserved communities, with an emphasis on environmental justice, reciprocity, and real‑world impact.
Note: This award emphasizes external community engagement rather than service primarily within the environmental programs.
This award recognizes a student whose contributions have strengthened the environmental studies and science program as a learning community. Recipients demonstrate leadership, service, mentorship, or behind‑the‑scenes support that helps peers, faculty, and the program thrive. This may include formal leadership roles, peer mentoring, event organization, supporting new students, or consistently contributing care, initiative, and responsibility to the program’s shared work.
Note: This award focuses on contributions to the environmental program itself, rather than external community engagement.
