Program Opportunity at USC - School of Medicine
If you are interested in applying to medical school there is a wonderful opportunity
to gain medical experience through the Finding Your Future program at the University
of South Carolina School of Medicine (USC-SOM). One guaranteed spot has been reserved
for a Winthrop Student (any major). This is a competitive program, but the three Winthrop
students who have participated in the previous three years of the program have all
been accepted to one or more medical schools.
What is the Finding Your Future Program
Finding Your Future provides meaningful "medical experience" which will help support
your AMCAS application. Each student will rotate on a weekly basis among the following
clinical areas within the USC School of Medicine - Columbia: Family and Preventive
Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and
Surgery. The program offers exposure to various aspects of the clinical arena including
procedures, patient interaction and education, as well as assistance with the medical
school application process via a mock interview.
Who Should Apply
Competitive undergraduate students, rising senior premed student who do not already
have an acceptance to another medical school. Students are nominated by their Pre-Med
advisors for participation in the program and must commit to the entire four weeks
without exception. Preference will be given to rising seniors.
Where
Various USC SOM - Columbia clinical departments on the Palmetto Health Richland campus
and private practice physicians.
When
June 4 — June 29, 2018. Typical daily schedule is 8:00 a.m. — 5:00 p.m., Monday through
Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. — 12:00 noon on Fridays. Surgery rotations will be approximately
7:45 a.m. — 3:00 p.m. Schedules will be assigned and other pertinent details will
be given at an orientation session to be held Monday, June 5 at 9:00 a.m. in the Derrick
Room located inside the Palmetto Health Children's Hospital at 7 Medical Park, Columbia,
SC 29203 on the first floor.

courses)
4. A brief statement of application indicating why you are interested in medicine,
where you are in your academic career at Winthrop, and how the Finding Your Future
program could help you achieve your goals.
