Established by Northwestern High School’s Class of 1975 in honor of Principal Samuel R. Foster, Sr., a trailblazer and the first African American to lead an integrated high school in South Carolina, he provided steady, inspired leadership during a pivotal time in history. The Samuel R. Foster, Sr. Endowed Scholarship celebrates his decades of leadership and his commitment to fairness, equal opportunity, and quality education. The scholarship supports Winthrop students preparing to teach at the secondary level and aims to encourage future educators who will strive to make a difference.
