Scholarship: TRiO Achievers
Drew Johnson is a first-generation college student from Indian Land, South Carolina, whose Winthrop experience has been transformed by the TRiO Achievers Program. When he graduated high school in 2016, he was overwhelmed at the thought of going away to college. But when a TRiO Achievers packet arrived the summer before college, he knew immediately it would be a program that would help ease his transition.
“TRiO Achievers CONNECT allowed me to move into my dorm room two days early,” Johnson said. “During those two days, I met other TRiO students and learned tips about managing college life while gaining valuable insight about what to expect. Those two days put my mind at ease and ended up creating what will be life-long friendships.”
During the 2019- 20 academic year, the Class of 1960 Endowment provided financial support through the Winthrop Fund to the TRiO Achievers Program and the McNair Scholars. Through these programs, the Class of 1960 has positively impacted today’s Winthrop students.
