FINANCIAL MARKETS SEMINAR: BADM 402/602

Each May, the Winthrop University College of Business and Technology offers a finance related course for 20 MBA candidates and undergraduates who have achieved junior status.  This course is designed to help students understand how the financial markets operate. Winthrop schedules a variety of lectures and tours in New York.

Throughout the week, students will visit significant landmarks, major financial services companies and meet some of the key decision makers in these firms. The class will meet with investment bankers, retail and institutional stock brokers, analysts, managers of various departments, and chief economists of some of Wall Street's largest firms. During these sessions the class will have an opportunity to question people who are regularly quoted in financial papers and magazines.

Students receive three credit hours for the class and will receive a Bloomberg Market Concepts certification upon completion of an eight-hour self-paced on-line course that will help round out their resume.

A trip to the Statue of Liberty has been scheduled for the first day of the trip upon arrival to the city. Other than the first day, students are on their own to take full advantage of what the city has to offer once scheduled group visits listed on the itinerary are over. Students will then be free to enjoy the city.

The group stays at a Wellington hotel which is in the heart of the city, so Times Square and all the major Broadway theaters are within walking distance. The students will also be provided with a Metro Card for the subway which provides inexpensive and easy access to other attractions. Baseball games at Yankee Stadium, shopping on Fifth Avenue, Central Park, nightlife in the Village of Upper East Side, sightseeing excursions, and fine dining are a few of the favorite activities of past students.
