Admissions Requirements

Transcripts of all college course work (part- or full-time, attempted or completed)
from every institution attended (even if credit was not earned or transfer credit is not desired)

Application fee: $50

Be at least 23 years old OR an experienced member of the U.S. military (active, reserve,
or veteran)

Have attained an associate’s degree designed for university transfer from an accredited
college OR at least 30 credits geared toward university transfer

Have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale from prior institutions
(including a 2.0 GPA during their last term of attendance)
Additional requirements for applicants with course work completed at foreign institutions
Winthrop University does not evaluate or translate transcripts from foreign institutions.
If you have taken classes at a foreign institution, your application will be considered
incomplete until the following documents have been received by the Office of Admissions:
- An official copy of the transcript mailed directly from the institution to Winthrop
University.
- If the courses were not taught in English, an official English translation is also
required.
- An official course-by-course credential evaluation must also be sent to the Office
of Admissions. The credential evaluation must be performed by World Education Services
(www.wes.org) or by an agency that is a member of NACES (www.naces.org/members.htm).
Important Notes:
- All transfer applicants must be eligible to return to the last institution attended.
- There are two basic residence requirements:
- A minimum of 25% of the semester hours required for a degree (30 hours in a 120-hour program) must be taken in residence at Winthrop University within five calendar years preceding the date the degree is granted.
- A minimum of 12 semester hours of course credits must be taken in residence at Winthrop
in the major discipline(s).
- Course work posted on the transcripts from institutions other than the original college
where work was actually completed is not acceptable. The application will be considered
incomplete until a separate transcript from each institution has been received by
the Office of Admissions.
- Note that course work completed at an institution that does not hold accreditation
from the commission on colleges or higher education of a regional accreditation agency will
be evaluated for transfer credit to Winthrop University on an individual basis.
