The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries or areas and world regions. The program also encourages students to study languages, especially critical need languages (those deemed important to national security). Over 3,600 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study or intern abroad.
Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being $4,000. Students who apply for and receive the Gilman Scholarship to study abroad are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. Critical languages include: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Russian, and others.
There are eligibility requirements that students must meet to receive the award. Applicants must be Pell Grant eligible and must study in one country for at least three weeks during any semester. There are also deadlines to apply for each semester, March 1 (for study beginning in Fall); October 1 (for study beginning Winter/Spring). If interested, we recommend that you being the process of applying for awards ASAP. The process can be found on the How To page.
