New Design Chair Named at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – The College of Visual and Performing Arts at Winthrop University has named Eva Roberts as the new chair of the Department of Design. Roberts will begin her role on August 1, 2020. 

Professor Roberts is currently the chair of the visual communication design department at the Herron School of Art + Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), a post she’s held since 2011. 

“Eva possesses a wealth of experience as a designer, department chair and faculty member that will be extremely valuable to Winthrop University,” said Jeff Bellantoni, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. “We are excited to welcome her to our college and to work together on innovative ways to grow our Department of Design.” 

With more than 20 years of design education experience, Roberts has taught at the Museum School in Boston, Massachusetts, UMass/Dartmouth and is professor emeritus at East Carolina University School of Art and Design. Her career includes projects that range from wayfinding and environmental graphics to identity and publication design. While teaching at ECU, Roberts spent five years as art director of North Carolina Literary Review, an academic journal honored for being among the first to bring contemporary design to this genre. Her design work can be seen in numerous books and journals and has been recognized by AIGA, Print Magazine and the American Center for Design, among others. 

Roberts earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in product design/visual design from the North Carolina State University School of Design. 

About the College of Visual and Performing Arts

Winthrop University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) is the academic home to approximately 700 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in dance, design, studio arts, music and theatre. The college currently employs over 55 full-time faculty as well as part-time lecturers, all practicing professionals from the surrounding metropolitan area. Winthrop is one of only 37 universities in the United States and the only public or private institution in South Carolina with all five of its undergraduate and graduate arts programs nationally accredited (NASAD, NAST, NASD, NASM and CIDA). In addition, Winthrop’s arts education programs in art, music, theatre and dance are accredited through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
