Welcome to the Office of General Counsel

The Office of General Counsel advises and represents Winthrop University. We provide legal and risk management advice on a wide variety of matters to the Board of Trustees, the President, senior officers, other university administrators, and faculty and staff who are acting on behalf of the university. As a part of the Office of the President, we are committed to researching the law and advising the University on compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations. We work with all campus divisions to develop policies and draft or review legal agreements. We do not represent or advise faculty, staff, or students in private legal matters.  

 

Mission

The mission of the Office of General Counsel is to provide effective legal advice and services on matters from all sectors of Winthrop University in order to further the University’s goals and initiatives. We work with all internal stakeholders to provide requested advice on legal and risk management matters to ensure compliance and reduce legal risks. We assist campus offices to develop policies, practices, procedures. We collaborate with leadership to provide creative solutions in response to situational challenges and in order to prevent legal risk. 

 

Services

  • Management and coordination of all legal services for Winthrop University.
  • Research of federal or state laws and regulations to advise University leadership with regard to compliance and risk reduction. 
  • Drafts or reviews all University contracts or other legal agreements.
  • Serves as the Production Officer to coordinate and provide public documents in response to requests made under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act.
  • Works with the SC Attorney General’s Office to approve the employment of outside counsel engaged to assist in specialized legal matters.
